The "Institut de Biologie Physico-Chimique" was created in 1930 by the Foundation Edmond de Rothschild.

The laboratories initially composing the Institute have evolved to become Research Units associated with the CNRS (Centre National de la Recherche Scientifique). In 1997, the building was devolved to the CNRS and IBPC became a Federated Research Institute of the CNRS, FRC 550 including 5 research units managed either directly by the CNRS or by both CNRS and Paris universities. These units are linked to either the Life Sciences Department or to the Chemical Sciences Department.
